Five Contenders, Six Rounds and No Prizes for Participation
The era when short-drama apps were a niche curiosity passed some time ago. By Sensor Tower’s count, worldwide in-app revenue for the category reached about $700M in Q1 2025, and 49% of it came from the US. Roughly $2.8–3B was the figure for full-year 2025, and the quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M by Q1 2026. Five names lead the conversation, namely ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave, and anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has run into at least free drama shorts one of them. At first glance, they seem identical: vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Below the surface, though, they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and those differences change what you pay and where you can watch. Six rounds, one winner in each: that is the format, and we relied on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Big Comparison Grid
This grid puts the whole field on one screen before the rounds start. Prices are the figures displayed in the US App Store as of September 2026, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. On market share, the figures are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. We took install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. Where a cell says „not reported”, no reliable source released the figure, and we would rather leave a gap than guess. Think of the rounds below as the commentary and the grid as the scoreboard.

Round 1: Ownership and Scale
ReelShort, the incumbent, continues to carry the most weight. MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China; released in August 2022, it comes from Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group. Its 2025 revenue stands at $785M in MPA’s estimate, and MPA projects $1.05B for 2026. Holding about 21%, DramaBox launched in April 2023 and is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. ReelShort led $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, and DramaBox ranked first. The newest app in this lineup is DramaWave, often mistyped as „dreamwave”, yet it already holds about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly exceeded $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama, the minnow with 5M+ Android installs, is nonetheless the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. ShortMax operates from Hong Kong and appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. Just outside this lineup, GoodShort has, for context, about 6%. The winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.
Round 2: Cost
Nowhere else do the apps look so alike. A weekly pass at about $19.99 is sold by ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave in the US App Store, and each one auto-renews. ShortMax also offers a $9.99 „Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. DramaBox goes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. In these US listings, the only verified monthly plan is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, which makes it the standout. Since four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass total about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the better buy for steady viewers. The number on your screen may differ, because prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Winner: DramaWave, on the strength of a monthly plan that undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin.
Round 3: Watching for Free
Free viewing is where the marketing gets loud and the details get thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, per ReelShort’s own blog. A seven-day check-in streak earns 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. Official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and „unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Only third-party guides give DramaBox’s exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins, even if the app has free options too. Winner: ReelShort, and clearly so.
Round 4: Devices and Platforms
Screens are where these apps genuinely part ways. Beyond iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress syncing across devices. Because its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax also offers web browsing. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly points you back to the app. The trump card belongs to My Drama, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort overall, although My Drama claims the living room.
Round 5: Library and Originals
On raw numbers, ShortMax is unbeatable. As of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations, and the app now claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. DramaWave says it has 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and according to reports, more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox’s answer. Fox’s commitment to 200+ vertical titles over two years gives My Drama the most interesting pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, by sheer volume.

Round 6: Bonus Features and Fine Print
DramaWave comfortably takes this round. Its App Store listing lists offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison has verified offline viewing. Anyone who switches between phone and laptop will find ReelShort’s cross-device sync the next most useful perk. Since it varies more than the prices do, the fine print merits a look too. Under ShortMax’s terms, refunds are not given „unless the paid product/service is unusable”, while My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. On any of these apps, deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. Round winner: DramaWave.
Best For: The Final Verdict
No single short drama app takes every round, which means the right choice depends on how you watch. For Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. ReelShort is best for web viewing, with a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. ShortMax is best for sheer volume, since its claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid. For commuters and steady bingers, DramaWave is best, pairing offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, is best for backing the current revenue leader. ReelShort is once again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. If you are tempted by all five, pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
